Independence Day at Usum School

On September 21, Armenia marks one of the most significant holidays of its statehood – Independence Day. On this day in 1991, a nationwide referendum was held, during which the Armenian people overwhelmingly chose the path of establishing an independent and sovereign state. The proclamation of independence became the result of a centuries-long struggle and opened a new chapter in our history, strengthening the values of freedom, democracy, and national self-determination.

More than three decades later, Independence Day remains not only a moment of historical remembrance but also a symbol of national identity. At “Usum” School, the holiday is traditionally celebrated with warmth and creative initiatives. The school community believes that future generations should inherit not only the facts of independence but also the emotions and values tied to the very idea of independence.

To mark the occasion, a series of events were organized at the school. In the open yard, students took part in a chalk art flashmob, where through colorful drawings they expressed patriotic thoughts and aspirations for peace. Each class also created its own class flag, combining the colors of the national flag with their class symbols and ideas of friendship. This activity served as both a creative exercise and an expression of unity.

In addition, students engaged in painting and crafts, where their works depicted Armenia’s mountains, symbolic images of the Artsakh struggle, and the fundamental values on which our independent statehood is built.

Teachers also emphasized the importance of the holiday. In their words, independence is not only an achievement inherited from the past but also a responsibility that must be lived and reinforced through everyday actions.

By the end of the day, the schoolyard was filled with an atmosphere of joy and togetherness. The shining eyes of the students reflected both the excitement of participation and their love for the homeland.

At Usum School, there is a strong belief that such celebrations play a vital role in shaping students’ national self-awareness, fostering patriotism, and preparing them to become responsible citizens of tomorrow.
