About Us

Yerevan Usum Secondary School was established on June 27, 1997, by the order of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia No. 125-M, which granted the school the license No. 26 to provide general secondary education.

Usum School began its journey with just 14 students and 16 educators (as of September 8, 1997).
Over the past three decades, the school has flourished under the leadership of:
Haykaz Navasardyan (1997-2002), Honored Teacher of Armenia
Vardan Piliposyan (2002-2005)
Susana Tamaryan (2005–present)
Usum School has made significant contributions to the establishment of the private school system in Armenia and the development of knowledge-based education, earning numerous awards, diplomas, and letters of appreciation from government institutions and local organizations.
In 2017, on its 20th anniversary, the school received special letters of appreciation from the Minister of Education and Science of Armenia, L. Mkrtchyan, and the head of the Kanaker-Zeytun Administrative District for its leadership in youth education.
In 2019, Usum School was honored with a special letter of appreciation by the Minister of Defense of Armenia for its patriotic education initiatives.
In 2021, the school received the “Trust Rating” award for its exceptional contributions to general education.
Usum School has been at the forefront of educational innovation in Armenia:
It was the first school in the country to introduce Chess (2004), Checkers (2008), and Song and Dance (2010) as part of the curriculum.
It actively collaborates with the Chess and Checkers Federations of Armenia, participating in various age-group competitions in Yerevan and nationwide championships, achieving nine national championship titles (1st to 3rd) in team competitions.
Before project-based learning became a mandatory component of general education in the country, Usum School had already integrated it into its curriculum in 2021 for students in grades 5-12.
Since the 2023-2024 academic year, the school has fully adopted the new subject-specific standards for general education.

Usum School provides a three-level education system, covering all stages of compulsory general education: 
Elementary School (Grades 1-4) 
Middle School (Grades 5-9) 
High School (Grades 10-12), featuring a modular education system.

In June 2021, Usum School celebrated its anniversary with the unveiling of its official school anthem, composed by Robert Amirkhanyan, People’s Artist of Armenia.
That same year, Usum became a member of the “One Voice” Independent Schools Association of Armenia, advocating for the role of private education in the country. The school’s founder H. Navasardyan is one of the 8 members of the council of "One Voice."

Approaching its 30th anniversary, Usum School continues to grow with 900 students and nearly 100 educators.
Committed to blending innovation with tradition, the school remains dedicated to fostering critical thinkers and value-driven citizens—a philosophy embodied in its motto:
“TO NOT THINK FREELY IS TO NOT THINK AT ALL.”
