Along the Paths of a Familiar and Unfamiliar Homeland

It is no secret that our history is built upon the idea of the enduring spirit of our people. The Armenian people are among the most ancient in the world, with a history that dates back thousands of years. Throughout the centuries, Armenia has been a powerful state, stretching from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean, and from the Black Sea to northern Mesopotamia. It is on this land that our culture, language, and national identity were formed, becoming the foundation of our existence.

As a result of the complex and at times tragic turns of history, the borders of our homeland have changed, yet the spirit, worldview, and cultural creativity of the Armenian people have never altered. A vivid testament to this is the creation of the Armenian alphabet by Mesrop Mashtots, which made it possible to preserve and pass on our cultural heritage from generation to generation.

Although today our homeland may not possess its historical vast borders, it continues to live in the heart of every Armenian—with its mountains, rivers, churches, and traditions. For us, Armenia is not merely a geographical territory; it is our memory, our identity, and our future.

With this very ideological emphasis, a unique and impressive theatrical performance took place at the school, taking the audience on a symbolic journey through the historical and modern maps of Armenia. The performance not only told the story of the homeland’s glorious past, but also highlighted the value of the present and the responsibility toward the future.

Beginning with the appreciation of a homeland once stretching from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean, and from the Black Sea to Armenian Mesopotamia, the event aimed to bring the audience closer to our people’s powerful and glorious past, and then return them to the present with clear messages and a strong intention to revive that legacy.

The performance continued as a lively journey through the regions of Armenia. The first stop was Aragatsotn Province, with the spiritually radiant Oshakan, where the audience encountered the symbolic figure of Mesrop Mashtots. Through his words, the importance of the Armenian language as the foundation of identity and existence was emphasized.

The stage then transformed into the colorful and humorous atmosphere of Gyumri, with its unique dialect, lifestyle, and warm hospitality. The cultural features, traditions, and heartfelt attitude of the people made this one of the most vivid parts of the performance.

The next stop was the Tumanian Lori region, with its emerald forests and misty mountains, enriched with humorous episodes that conveyed the warmth and sincerity of the region. The next destination for the young students and the audience was Syunik, with its powerful mountains and historical monuments, including Tatev Monastery and the ancient Karahunj, presented as important centers of Armenian culture and science.

Traveling through all the regions and corners of the homeland, the students concluded the performance with the idea of appreciating every part of Armenia without dividing the homeland or the people. The participants emphasized that the homeland is not merely a territory, but a unity of memory, culture, and identity.

With the message “Armenia is not a map; Armenia is us,” the performance became not only an artistic event, but also an important message addressed to everyone.
